Scoring Terminology

Grade – the level to which your student’s scores
were compared/ranked.

Standard or Scaled Score – continuum score that
shows academic growth from year to year.

Grade Equivalent (GE)

Used
to measure growth from year to year

1st
digit represents year of grade level

2nd
digit represents month of that grade level.

Score means an average student at that level taking
the same test – does NOT mean the student has
academic skills for work at that level.

National Percentile Rank (NPR)
-
On a
scale from 1 to 99
-
Represents the percentage of students at or below
your student’s score.
-
Comparison group comes from a variety of schools
nationwide.

Percentile is NOT percentage.
-
Graphed as percentile bands to compensate for
statistical error (5-8 points).

Gives student’s relationship to the average.

National Stanine (NS)
-
On a
scale from 1 to 9

Divides the normal curve into 9 units.

Gives student’s relationship to the average.
