A+ Science Fair Projects (Paperback)
by VanCleave, Janice
It’s that time of year
again! Are your students ready to tackle science fair
season? Janice VanCleave attempts to prepare them in her
A+ Science Fair Projects. This book involves much more
than a list of experiments and goes well beyond the
clichés of volcanoes and solar system models.
VanCleave’s personable writing style is evident in the
brief introduction on how to use the book. Your child
will be able to take the book and run with it on their
own, even with minimal previous experience in science.
The scientific method is introduced and explained, and a
glossary is included to aid in difficult words. At the
beginning there is a guide on the fair itself, from
entering projects in the proper categories all the way
down to the actual presentation. After the
well-explained projects there are many appendices that
are useful to the student. VanCleave urges the reader to
go well beyond what is in her book and facilitates this
with a bibliography of experiment resources categorized
by particular science. Information on catalogs of
supplies is included as well. A+ Science Experiments is
a fun book for those who love science and those who
don’t – yet.

The Five Love Languages of Children (Paperback)
by Chapman, Gary & Ross Campbell, M.D.
The key to raising your children well
is loving them well. This is the primary assertion
of Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell’s The Five Love
Languages of Children. Building on the concepts of
Chapman’s previous Five Love Languages and
Campbell’s How to Really Love Your Child, this book
seeks to aid parents in speaking to their children
with the language of love that will be understood
and responded to best. Although it encourages
readers to use all languages, The Five Love
Languages of Children outlines and explains exactly
how to determine what your child needs most. The
book also includes comprehension helps and
discussion questions that would make it great group
study material. The vivid examples of real-life
stories and the logical, easy-to-follow outline of
the book make it simple to remember and even easier
to put into practice. Chapman and Campbell also go
the extra mile in answering specific questions, such
as in the chapter entitled “Speaking the Love
Languages in Single-Parent Families.” Overall, this
book is an outstanding example of the excellence
that can be achieved when relationships are studied
and practiced from a godly perspective. The Five
Love Languages of Children will be the key to loving
your children like never before.

History Stories for Children
(Paperback)
written by Dr. John W. Wayland;
revised by Michael J. McHugh
Many cultures have passed
on their history through storytelling, especially around
specific holidays and occasions. With Thanksgiving and
other holidays on the way, there is a great opportunity
to teach your own children about the past of our faith
and our country. Christian Liberty Press’s History
Stories for Children seeks to aid in this endeavor.
Each page is easy to read and many include pictures to
capture interest and stimulate the imagination. After
some stories there are notes to the “teacher” that give
extra information and suggestions for activities to
reinforce the learning experience. A delightful read!

OCTOBER'S FEATURED
TITLE!!!
The Relaxed Home School
(Paperback)
by Mary Hood, Ph.D.
In The Relaxed Home
School: A Family Production, Mary Hood uses a
theatre-based analogy to outline a method for organizing
your homeschool that balances the extremes of
super-school-structure and lackadaisical lolly-gagging.
She describes the roles of parents and children and
explains how the parent's role as the
producers/directors does not forbid the input of
children in the education process. Through each
comprehensively-outlined chapter, the author explains
the “home-school production crew,” the script-writing
process (educational goals), stage-setting in the hearts
and in the home, the important “acts” that must take
place, guiding plans for the future, and preparing for
the ever-present critics (or evaluators). Throughout the
book, personal examples (specifically Hood’s daughter
who is an aspiring actress) are used that encourage the
reader and demonstrate the principles described. The
allegorical style and friendly narrative of The
Relaxed Home School make it manageable reading for
any homeschool parent who is trying to get organized
amidst their hectic life.

SEPTEMBER'S FEATURED
TITLE!!!
Keeping Our Children's Hearts
(Paperback)
by Steve and Teri Maxwell
This month we are once
again featuring the work of the Maxwell family! This
time, Steve and Teri Maxwell together share their
convictions and experience from two decades of child
rearing in Keeping Our Children’s Hearts. In it,
the Maxwells outline and defend a biblical basis and
methodology for “sheltering.” This “controversial” idea
is asserted to be separate from the usual stereotypes of
an isolated or judgmental family. Examples of how it’s
worked in their family are vivid and helpful (this
includes input from the grown-up Maxwell children).
Though some of the decisions that they have made for
their own family may seem extreme to the typical
Christian, homeschooling family, the principles are
applicable for everyone. Not everything is a “don’t”
issue, but buzzwords such as courtship, television,
music, and youth groups are addressed. The book also
includes a very tightly argued chapter on answering "naysayers”
that points out the logical and practical flaws in many
of the problems presented with the concept of
“sheltering.” Questions for study and discussion are
included at the end of every chapter.

Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet
Spirit
(Paperback)
by Teri Maxwell
For those of us whose
homeschooling woes are tearing us apart at the seams,
Teri Maxwell offers some helpful advice in
Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit. In this
conversational book, Teri draws from her own experiences
and leads the reader to a godly definition of a “meek
and quiet spirit,” and the tools needed to get there.
The tone is encouraging and never judgmental, as she
speaks from the view of someone who has been there (and
is still there). Not only does she offer practical tips
for the day-to-day battles with anger, fear, and
organization, Teri promotes proactive attitudes (such as
gratitude) for the “meek and quiet” homeschooling
mother. “Application Projects” are at the end of
every chapter to make the goals more attainable.
Throughout the book, the emphasis is on leading a life
that is honoring to God and a good example to be
followed. What could be more important education for
your children than to see this spirit in their parents?

JULY'S
FEATURED TITLE!!!
Shepherding a Child's
Heart
(Paperback)
by Tedd Tripp
Sometimes character
building can seem to be the most daunting task for any
parent, especially those who are seeking to educate
their children in the home. With all the advice thrown
at us from different worldviews, how can we make sense
of it all? In his book Shepherding a Child’s Heart,
pastor/author/father Ted Tripp explains the how-to’s and
why’s of child-rearing God’s way. He explains why the
methods we have pragmatically used in the previous
generation are not only useless in the changing times
but were never aligned with God’s ideal. Part One lays
the “foundation,” explaining what should be our true
parenting goals and the methods that can be used to get
us there. The focus lies mainly in communication; how,
why, and what to communicate to your child. As biblical
methods are clarified and unbiblical methods are
discarded, the reader is encouraged as well as educated.
In Part Two, Tripp applies the principles he’s outlined
to each stage from infancy to the teenage years.
Overall, this book is a biblical, practical, and
complete source of information.

JUNE'S
FEATURED TITLE!!!
The Home Schooling Father
(Paperback)
by Michael P. Farris
June is a month in which
we have a special day set aside for just fathers, and
this month’s featured book speaks to that sentiment.
Michael Farris, founder of the Home School Legal Defense
Association and homeschooling father, outlines the
spiritual, educational, and practical responsibilities
that are specific to a Christian homeschooling dad. His
instructions are well-explained and applicable to almost
any situation, whether you are raising boys or girls,
many children or few, older or younger. He begins with
the spiritual role of a Christian father and expounds on
how that applies to his role as protector in the home
(and specifically in the home school). Then he gives
sensible advice for preparing your children for future
careers, mates, and involvement in government. He closes
with a message of encouragement to homeschooling
fathers. Personal experience and sound thinking are
evident throughout the book. Although it is written
toward fathers, the book is useful for homeschooling
mothers as well.

How to Study Your Bible for
Kids (Paperback)
by Kay Arthur & Janna Arndt
With Easter rolling
around, parents and children often find themselves
taking stock of their spiritual lives and dedication to
their Lord and Savior. How to Study Your Bible for
Kids by Kay Arthur and Janna Arndt is just the book
to spark your child’s interest! This book teaches your
children to study their Bible inductively instead of
relying on the word of others. It works in a fun and
engaging way, referring to the process as a “mystery” to
be solved and including lots of activities to keep their
interest. Not only is it fun, parents can be assured
that it is worthwhile. It is divided into daily plans
and starts with the basics of grammar and moves up
through questions to be asked about the meaning and
cultural context of what is being studied. Children as
well as adults will enjoy and benefit from the
information presented in this book. New Christians will
be taught how to grow in their relationship with God and
older Christians can renew their love and understanding
about God’s Word.
